Plans to celebrate centenery of flight
02.06.10
The centenary of flight in South Hampshire will be marked by events including a special flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight this Summer. The flypast, organised by Eastleigh Borough Council, will take place on the afternoon of Saturday July 24, and will include three flights over the Southampton Water area.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight includes a trio of historic aircraft that will over fly areas in both Eastleigh and Southampton to mark the birth of aviation in the region 100 years ago. They will include; a Hurricane, the UK’s only flying Lancaster a Spitfire, which was designed and built locally and took its first test flight from Southampton Airport in 1936.
The flypast will celebrate 100 years since the first flight at Southampton Airport when Edwin Rowland Moon flew his homemade Moonbeam II aircraft from the fields of North Stoneham Farm (now Southampton Airport).
Details of the best vantage points and timings will be publicised closer to the time. However, the aircraft can be viewed along the waterfront from Weston Shore to Hamble Point, and from on the water itself. To find out more visit www.centenary-of-flight.co.uk.
