Flybe flight emergency
04.10.09
Passengers on a Flybe flight to Southampton Airport were involved in an emergency landing after a mid-air scare minutes before landing yesterday. A burning smell filled the cabin of the 14:25 flight from Edinburgh as the plane prepared for its descent.
The flight crew ordered passengers to tighten their seat belts as they attempted to find the problem. On the ground, firefighters from Eastleigh and Southampton were put on standby. When the jet finally touched down, the airport's firefighters rushed on board and flight engineers investigated the problem.
A spokesman from Hampshire Fire & Rescue later confirmed that a bearing in the plane's air conditioning system had overheated, triggering the alarm.
