Two new fire safety vehicles unveiled

07.08.11

Southampton Airport has unveiled two new fire service vehicles The Rosenbauer Panther 6x6 is a specialist fire engine specifically designed for airport use. The two new fire safety vehicles were built in Austria, have a life span of 20 years, and represent an investment of over €1m.

Each of the vehicles weighs 35 tonnes and carries a combination of water (12,791 litres), specialist foam (1583 litres) plus a variety of other safety equipment. They are capable of travelling up to 50mph, enabling the crew to be at any airport location within 3 minutes of an emergency call.

The vehicles also use Euro three Caterpillar C18 diesel engines, which meet European environmental standards, and are more efficient than the 20 year old fire engines they replace. Other benefits include; infrared to help with locating objects in reduced visibility such as fog, 80m hose reels, cab operated foam monitors that can be used whilst in motion, as well as better acceleration and top speeds.
