World Cup operation launched
02.06.10
A national operation that aims to identify known football hooligans attempting to travel to the World Cup has been launched. Specialist police officers have started patrols at UK airports to stop potential troublemakers travelling to the competition in South Africa.
Known troublemakers with football banning orders have been forced to surrender their passports, and must report to a designated police station on the day of each England match. Officers will stop them, or anyone else suspected of being involved in football violence, from boarding flights. A 2006 operation at Southampton Airport found 36 people in breach of their orders.
