Southampton Airport has played a 'key role' in the city being voted the sixth best location in the UK for international transport links. The 2007 Cushman & Wakefield UK Cities Monitor report named Southampton one of the UK's major international travel hubs.
The company carried out research among senior executives from the top 200 UK companies, examining the the key issues that are taken into account when firms consider where to locate their business. It noted that Southampton Airport, with its close links to rail and motorway networks, coupled with Southampton Container Port, was continuing to attract strong growth to the city.
London was the number one commercial destination, followed by Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Bristol. Southampton came in at number six, ahead of other cities including Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool, Belfast and Cardiff.
14 airlines currently serve 47 destinations around the UK and Europe from the south coast hub, including important business centres such Frankfurt and Dusseldorf in Germany, Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam and Brussels.
Chris Butler, the airport's managing director, said: 'This report highlights that cities are increasingly in competition with each other to attract inward investment. Naturally an international airport plays a key role in this.'
