Fog causes major delays and cancellations
16.10.07
Passengers travelling via Southampton Airport yesterday were hit by delays and cancellations after heavy fog left planes grounded. It was the second time in less than a week that flights at the airport had to be delayed or cancelled because of fog.
Only a handful of early morning flights - including flights to Paris, Manchester, Edinburgh and Brussels - managed to take off, then all planes were grounded shortly after 07:00 as the weather got worse. Flights heading to Southampton from Guernsey, Jersey, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle, Dublin, Amsterdam and Glasgow were all abandoned. Other flights were diverted to Bournemouth, Bristol and even as far away as Manchester.
Operations resumed shortly after 09:30, but by then flights from Southampton to Newcastle, Dublin, Leeds Bradford, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Jersey and Edinburgh had to be cancelled, with other flights suffering an average delay of 2 hours.
