Flybe call for airport sale
21.12.08
Flybe has called for the Competition Commission to force BAA to sell Southampton Airport. The regional budget airline has said that it is dismayed that the watchdog has not recommended the sale of Southampton in a provisional decision, instead calling for the sale of Gatwick, Stansted and Edinburgh airports.
Flybe’s chief commercial officer, Mike Rutter, said: ‘The Competition Commission has got it wrong on Southampton Airport. Despite detailed evidence provided by Flybe, they have ignored the fact that BAA have for years given Southampton a poor deal in comparison to their other airports in the South East.'
‘We are calling on the Competition Commission to revisit their findings, to actually undertake the research they themselves admit is missing from their analysis and come back with a different answer in February when they publish their final report.’
He said in the future BAA would continue to concentrate on Heathrow, pricing Southampton to deter competition with the London airport ‘to the clear detriment of south coast travellers’.
