Airport plans noise monitoring stations
22.06.09
Planes that stray off their designated flight path will be tracked for the first time by Southampton Airport. It plans to install a new system to track aircraft at low levels to within 5 metres. Noise campaigners hope the system will allow the airport to hold airlines accountable for specific noise complaints when planes leave agreed flight paths.
The proposal is part of a statutory 5 year noise action plan proposed by the airport to minimise the disturbance planes cause to nearby households. Two new mobile noise monitoring units will give a better picture of noise around the airport by next year. At present, data on the type, performance and routes of aircraft using the airport is fed into a computer which produces maps showing average noise levels.
