Up to 1000 jobs will be created thanks to a multi-billion pound deal that will see Southampton Airport become a centre for international business travel, the Daily Echo reports. Regional budget airline Flybe has signed a deal worth £850m to buy a new fleet planes, and plans to boost its passengers at the airport from two to three million a year.
The airline is reported to be planning to add as many as 10 new routes to the 36 it already operates from the airport, focusing on financial centres such as Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Milan and Stuttgart. It will also boost flights to other business communities that it already serves such as Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Hanover, promising a total of 14 new return flights a day.
Flybe chief commercial officer Mike Rutter said: ‘We will be making Southampton a hub of international business travel by introducing new destinations and increasing frequency on some of our other flight routes while still running the bucket and spade routes that leisure passengers enjoy.'
